The provincial government has conducted the annual qualifying examination for the “highly academically competent students” under the Provincial Scholarship Program (PSP).

About 1,528 senior high school graduates from all over the province, who are qualified to avail of the scholarship grant, took the competitive exam on April 27 in two testing centers in the province, the Pangasinan National High School in Lingayen for students from districts 1-3, and the Juan G. Macaraeg National High School in Binalonan for students from districts 4-6.

Irmina Francisco, Chief Administrative Officer and Chairperson of the Pangasinan Scholarship Program Management, Evaluation and Excellence Committee, said the scholarship assistance is offered by the provincial government to support “a financially challenged, yet academically competent student” who belongs to family with a combined income of less than Php150,000 per year.

The scholarship program was expanded during the term of former governor and now 5th District Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr. and was institutionalized under the incumbent leadership of Governor Amado I. Espino III through Provincial Ordinance No. 205, Series of 1217 (An Ordinance Institutionalizing the Provincial Scholarship Program (PSP) of the Province of Pangasinan and Appropriating Funds Therefor).

The top examinees will fill up the 150 slots for the incoming new batch of academic scholars. In addition are the
30 automatic qualifiers. These are the class valedictorians of their respective senior high schools who passed the required income qualifications of their respective families.

Each scholar is entitled to receive a financial assistance of Php10,000 per semester or Php20,000 annually until he/she finishes college schooling in his/her chosen university/college.

However, the grant is forfeited if a scholar: shifts to another course, fails to maintain a general weighted average of 85 per semester or has a failing grade.

Results of the examination shall be released on May 20.
