LINGAYEN, Pangasinan—Governor Amado I. Espino III led the ceremonial awarding and distribution of hybrid and certified palay seeds to farmers who were affected by the recent ‘Habagat’ spawned by tropical storm ‘Inday’ and tropical depression ‘Josie’ on August 2 at the Provincial Agriculture Office in Sta. Barbara.

The project is part of the rehabilitation assistance of the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the provincial government which amounted to P81 million worth of hybrid palay seeds (12,000 bags), certified palay seeds (20,000 bags) and hybrid corn seeds (100 bags) to the farmers whose crops were totally and partially damaged by the recent calamity.

It can be recalled that Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol personally came to the province on July 26 to hand over to Governor Espino the certificate of award for the initial rehabilitation assistance intended for various farmer organizations of the 32,000-hectare affected farmlands.

Expressing sadness over the plight of the farmers, Gov. Espino said the provincial government will extend their full support to the agricultural sector to include distribution of fertilizers as he further urged the farmers to be ‘patient’ because the national government through the DA secretary vowed to help those who were badly affected.

“Pangako hindi lang ang national government kundi ang provincial government ang magbibigay ng suporta at hindi natatapos ang programa sa pagbibigay ng binhi at abono lamang,” he said noting that aside from distributing seeds and fertilizers, the provincial government is set to implement the rehabilitation of roads that were damaged by the deluge.

Meanwhile, Provincial Agriculture Office Officer-in-Charge Dalisay Moya said the ceremonial distribution is part of the series of awarding for affected farmers throughout the province which will be held until August 7.

Joining the governor in the ceremonial awarding were Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member: Liberato Z. Villegas (chair of the committee on agriculture), Generoso Tulagan, Jr., Jeremy Agerico Rosario, together with Dr. Marvin Quilates, Center Chief of Pangasinan Research and Executive Center (PREC) who represented DA-RFO1 regional executive director Lucrecio R. Alviar. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
