Lingayen, Pangasinan – Medical doctors and staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (OLLH) provided free-of-charge surgical procedures to patients, particularly those who are financially incapable of paying costly surgical expenses, last June 1-3 at the Bolinao Community Hospital (BCH).

Conducted in partnership with the provincial government, the surgical mission headed by the Holy Spirit Sisters completed a total of 18 major surgical, and 68 minor surgical procedures, which was done at the new Operating Room – Delivery Room (OR-DR) of the community hospital.

Surgical procedures conducted include: thyroidectomy, herniorrhaphy/herniotomy, cleft lip surgery, radical mastectomy (breast mass removal), myoma removal, circumcision, among others.

Hospital Chief Genevieve Rivera said the community hospital’s OR-DR building was used for the first time by OLLH surgery experts.

The new OR-DR building — constructed under the leadership of Governor Amado I. Espino, III — has  complete OR equipment and paraphernalia to accommodate surgical procedures based on the requirements of the Department of Health (DOH) for the hospital’s upgrade to Level I classification, Dra. Rivera said.

“We are about to open it (the OR-DR building) for surgical procedures, and luckily dumating ang Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to conduct the surgical mission,” Rivera said.

The OR-DR complex is provided with complete OR equipment and paraphernalia which include: operating tables, OR light, ultraviolet light, anesthesia machine, suction apparatus, oxygen tank with gauge, OR instruments, ECG machine, and defibrillator.

Rivera noted that not only the BCH, but also all district and community hospitals run by provincial government have been upgraded under the stint of former governor and now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr. and is continued by his son and namesake, Governor “Pogi” Espino.

Meanwhile, OLLH Senior Vice President Paul Richard Camangian, who traces his roots in Bolinao, noted the hospital’s drastic transformation. He himself, in the past years had seen the hospital, which is located in barangay Sampaloc, on his way to the town proper.

“It was then dreary and dark. Today, hindi lang sya maganda sa labas, hanggang sa loob, maganda. Ngayon, para syang district hospital,” Camangian, surgical mission team leader, said.

The hospital’s standard operating protocol in compliance with DOH requirements was also noted by the visiting medical practitioners.

Meanwhile, Sr. Leonor Asanza of OLLH’s pastoral care unit said that the surgical mission is a big humanitarian event conducted by the hospital as a prelude to its 70th founding year celebration in July.
