LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – Hundreds of school heads, guidance counselors and teachers from various schools from both public and private across the country flocked the 53rdNational Midyear Conference organized by the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association (PGCA), Inc. in cooperation with PGCA – Pangasinan Chapter and Pangasinan State University (PSU) held at the Sison Auditorium, here, on October 23.

Recognizing the magnificent grandeur of the Sison Auditorium, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH) and the concurrent Director IV at the Bureau of Local Health Systems Development Dr. Enrique A. Tayag commended the organizing committee for the well-planned activities as part of the program.

“Guidance counselors in the country have important part to play.” Dr. Tayag further noted, in his keynote address, as he urged the participants to reach out to the needs of the students, especially in responding health and lifestyle issues of the youth.

Aligned with the theme: “Advocating Change, Healing Lives,” the two-day conference aims to improve the competencies of guidance counselors and related-helping professionals and help licensed counselors obtain continuing professional education points.

Ably representing Governor Amado I. Espino, III, Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Anna De Guzman took pride in welcoming the participants to the ‘Cultural Center of the North’ as she disclosed that one of the development thrusts of the governor is health

“The governor wants to deliver quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services in the province of Pangasinan” Dr. Anna added as she bared that part of the strategic plan of the provincial government is to make Pangasinan the home of the healthiest Filipinos.

Dr. Anna also urged the participants to take part in the advocacy against HIV/AIDS which is a collaborative program between Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) and DOH.

Some of the topics to be discussed during this two-day conference include: Contemporary Interventions and Strategies in Counseling; Career Guidance Program Relevant to K-12 Educational Reform; Psycho-Spiritual Counseling; Psycho-Trauma Counseling; and advocacies concerning Couple and Family Planning, Wellness through Mindfulness, Drug Prevention and Intervention and Welfare of the Filipino Children and Family.

The PGCA is the accredited professional organization of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) for Guidance and Counseling, as well as a PRC-accredited Continuing Professional Education (CPE) provider which aims to gather all guidance counselors for a better understanding of the principles, practices, and professional standards of guidance counseling.
