LINGAYEN, Pangasinan- – -Pangasinense athletes proved their sports supremacy after four school divisions dominated the top four overall standing and ranking in the recent 2017 Region 1 Athletics Association (R1AA).

The following school divisions bagged 5th to 14th rank with their specific medal counts: La Union (28 golds, 43 silvers, 37 bronzes); Laoag City (28, 43,37); Ilocos Norte (27, 35, 58); Batac City (25,21,5); San Carlos City (18, 23, 26); Ilocos Sur (17,22, 31); San Fernando City (16, 10, 18); Alaminos City (9,5, 20); Candon City (4, 5, 8); Vigan City (2, 3, 14).
It can be recalled that Ilocos Norte once dominated the R1AA previously known as IRAA until the Pangasinan provincial government has started to provide rigid in-house training for young athletes during the term of former governor now 5th district representative Amado T. Espino, Jr.
At present, the provincial government under the stewardship of Governor Amado “Pogi” I. Espino III is continuously conducting sports training for homegrown athletes as it likewise launched new sports projects such as the 1st Governor’s Cup Inter-Town Basketball Tournament.
Among the marching orders of Gov. Pogi in terms of sports development is intensive training of potential athletes in different sporting events.
Earlier, he organized the Pangasinan Sports Development and Management Council which is mandated to plan, supervise, manage and administer the province’s sports development program that has included among its priority the institutionalization of Sports Academy for the young, talented Pangasinense athletes from elementary to high school level that will hone their athletic prowess in various sporting events.
Expressing full trust on the sports abilities of local athletes, the Governor envisioned a sports program that will start from the grassroots level via widespread talent-identification, high caliber training program, proper nutrition and adequate provisions of equipment/facilities.
